Gold Coast City Council is committed to improving broadband access for residents and businesses.
In 2005, Gold Coast City Council ran a project to increase the coverage of Broadband Internet Services throughout the Gold Coast area.
This project successfully introduced wireless broadband capability into many suburbs that were unable to access ADSL over copper, and has exceeded its target of 80 per cent coverage. There is currently over 95 per cent coverage across the city.
While this project has concluded, Gold Coast City Council remains committed to increasing the access and range of high quality, low cost Internet solutions for the region.

Information gathered from a Broadband Usage Survey conducted in 2008, has contributed to Gold Coast City Council's strategic planning for improving broadband infrastructure and access throughout the region.
On 7 April 2009, the Australian Federal Government announced it will establish a new company that will invest up to $43 billion over eight (8) years, to build and operate a National Broadband Network, to deliver superfast broadband to Australian homes.
This new National Broadband Network will:
- connect 90 per cent of all Australian homes, schools and workplaces with broadband services, with speeds of up to 100 megabits per second - 100 times faster than those currently used by many households and businesses
- connect all other premises in Australia with next generation wireless and satellite technologies that will deliver broadband speeds of 12 megabits per second
- directly support up to 25,000 local jobs every year, on average, over the eight (8) year life of the project
Refer to the website in the Related Information - External links area below for more details on the National Broadband Network announcement.
The Australian Federal Government's announcement of 7 April 2009, aligns with Council's ongoing commitment to provide the highest global standard ICT infrastructure, in order to position the Gold Coast as a recognised leader within the ICT industry. One objective of that commitment is to provide fibre to the premises (FTTP) for over 90 per cent of the city. The Australian Federal Government's decision will assist Council to achieve this commitment.
