Zhuhai

Zhuhai, meaning Pearl Sea for its location at the juncture of the Pearl River and South Sea, is a city encapsulating 146 islands. The beaches and coastal lifestyle draw domestic visitors to its shores every summer and Zhuhai was name China’s most liveable city in 2014. Zhuhai was one of the first Special Economic Zones in mainland China and with the completion of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, Zhuhai will be the only city in China connected to Hong Kong and Macau by land.

  • Population: The population of Zhuhai is 1.6 million with the prefecture made up of 146 islands.
  • Language: The official language of Zhuhai is Mandarin; however Cantonese is widely spoken.
  • Location: Zhuhai is located on the southern coast of Guangdong Province in China.
  • Climate:
    • Spring (March to May): Mostly warm with high humidity. Spring marks the beginning of the wet season, with increased rainfall and occasional thunderstorms.
    • Summer (June to September): Extreme heat, although the weather is fine and clear. There is still high chance of rain with typhoons occurring in July.
    • Autumn (October to November): Temperatures fall slightly, but the heat is still there during the day with an average of 24°C. It rains less than previous months and the air is clear and clean.
    • Winter (December to February): Winters are not cold and temperatures stay above 10°C. Low rainfall means the days are dry, snowless and frostless.
  • Distance from the Gold Coast: The distance from the Gold Coast to Zhuhai is approximately eight hours by plane.
  • Local time: The local time of Zhuhai (and the whole of mainland China) is Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) +8 which makes it only two hours behind the Gold Coast.

History of relationship

  • In September 2017 a delegation from the Zhuhai Bureau of Commerce visited the Gold Coast for knowledge sharing with City of Gold Coast’s Economic Development branch.
  • In July 2016, a student group from No. 8 Middle School in Zhuhai visited the Gold Coast and their sister school, Varsity College.
  • In May 2016, a delegation from Zhuhai visited the Gold Coast to strengthen the Sister City relationship between both cities.
  • In October 2015, a delegation from Zhuhai visited the Gold Coast
  • In October 2014, Mayor Tom Tate led a trade mission to China, visiting Zhuhai.
  • In 2014, a student group from No. 8 Middle School in Zhuhai visited the Gold Coast and their sister school, Varsity College.
  • In 2014, the Zhuhai Public Security Office visited the Gold Coast to learn and observe practices.
  • In 2012, Mayor Tom Tate led a trade mission to China and signed the Sister City Agreement with Zhuhai.
  • In 2012, a delegation of education officials visited the Gold Coast.
  • In 2011, City of Gold Coast’s Economic Development Branch led a trade mission to southern China including an investment attraction seminar in Zhuhai.
  • In 2010, Cr Peter Young led a multi-sector trade mission to Zhuhai.
