Active & Healthy Recovery Project

The Active & Healthy Recovery Project is offering support to individuals with a lived experience of mental illness who would like to be more physically active. The Active and Healthy Alliance are funded by Partners in Recovery to deliver the project.

Research shows exercise can have a positive and important role in the recovery of mental illness. Apart from the obvious physical health benefits, exercise can also assist in alleviating low self-esteem and social withdrawal. Evidence is emerging that exercise is effective as a treatment for clinical depression and anxiety.

One in five Australians will suffer from a mental illness in any given year. A mental health problem also affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves, but to a lesser extent than a mental illness. Studies indicate that sport and recreation activities is very beneficial for people with a mental health problem. You might be aware of current members of your club suffering from a mental health:

  • anxiety
  • schizophrenia
  • bipolar mood disorder
  • personality disorders
  • eating disorders
  • depression

These illnesses may also be referred to as a mental disorder, mental impairment or psychiatric disability.

Key outcomes from the Project include:

  • Upskilling of over ninety community based fitness professionals in Mental Health First Aid
  • Improve the referral pathway for those with mental health concerns into regular exercise
  • Foster partnerships with government, non–government and community organisations
  • Develop a sustainable service model to cater to the complex needs of mental health clients on the Gold Coast
  • Develop an Active & Healthy Mental Health Program highlighting al the activities available on the Gold Coast that support people with an mental illness
