Accessible beaches

We are implementing a range of initiatives to improve access to beaches. The key initiatives are described below.

International Day of People with Disability: Beach access day at Burleigh Beach

We celebrated International Day of People with Disability on Saturday 2 December 2017 with a beach access event at Burleigh Beach.

International Day of People with Disability is held on 3 December each year to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and to celebrate the achievements and contributions of people with disability.

The beach access event was held on the beach outside the Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park Surf Life Saving Club between 10am and 1pm, where participants came along and tried a beach wheelchair and/or beach matting.

To book a beach wheelchair contact the Surf Club by phone 07 5535 2419 or email admin@burleighslsc.com.au.

Beach matting and beach wheelchairs

The City undertook a trial of beach matting and beach wheelchairs at Burleigh beach. The trial, which ran from September 2016 to April 2017, was a partnership between the City and the Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC).

Thanks to the overwhelming support of the community and the partnership of Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park SLSC in delivering this trial, the beach access program is now funded and delivered on a permanent basis at the following locations:
