We are implementing a range of initiatives to improve access to beaches. The key initiatives are described below.

Beach matting and beach wheelchairs

The City undertook a trial of beach matting and beach wheelchairs at Burleigh beach. The trial, which ran from September 2016 to April 2017, was a partnership between the City and the Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC).

Thanks to the overwhelming support of the community and the partnership of Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park SLSC in delivering this trial, the beach access program is now funded and delivered on a permanent basis at the following locations:

Kurrawa Surf Life Saving Club

WaterWheels beach wheelchair

WaterWheels beach wheelchair

A Sandcruiser and Hippocampe beach wheelchair will soon be available at Kurrawa beach, Broadbeach.

Beach matting and two types of beach wheelchairs are available at Burleigh beach: the Hippocampe and the Mobi beach wheelchair (both pictured below).

Southport Broadwater Parklands

Permanent beach matting

Permanent beach matting is located near the swimming enclosure at Southport Broadwater Parklands. The matting connects with the pathway and includes a landing section, which is partially covered by a shade sail.

Please note that the matting at this location, may not reach the hard sand - depending on the tide.

The matting is available for use anytime.

Floating pontoon and walkway

There is a floating pontoon and walkway in the parklands, which has been designed to provide access for everyone.

Note: the exact gradient of the walkway is subject to the tide.

Southport Surf Life Saving Club

Two Sandcruiser beach wheelchairs (adult and child size) are available at Southport beach.

Aquasplash

Beach matting and a WaterWheels beach wheelchair are also available at Aquasplash (inflatable water obstacle course, located at Southport Broadwater Parklands). There is no cost to use the beach wheelchair. 

*Please note that Aquasplash is currently closed and will reopen September 2018.

City-wide beach wheelchair loan

Gold Coast Recreation and Sport Inc.

Gold Coast Recreation and Sport Inc. has Hippocampe and Sandcruiser beach wheelchairs available free of charge, for use anywhere in the city. Chairs can be booked for several days at a time. Collection is from the organisation's premises in Southport.

Let’s go surfing days
