Flood mitigation

Understanding your flood risk

City of Gold Coast is committed to protecting both our built and natural environments against flooding.

A flood is a temporary rise of a water level from a creek, river, lake or along a coastline, resulting in it spilling over and out of its natural or artificial confines onto land that is normally dry. Floods are usually caused by excessive runoff from rainfall or by coastal storm surges or other tidal phenomena. It may also occur when intense rainfall that overwhelm existing stormwater infrastructure.

The Gold Coast has more than 55 kilometres of coastline and over 260 kilometres of navigable waterways. These natural and man-made features that make our lifestyle unique also present significant challenges and opportunities for managing flooding that is predicted to occur with climate change.

For best practice in managing floods, a holistic approach requires you to:

Preparing for a flood

Living in one of the most beautiful parts of the world can also bring its hazards. Severe flooding is one of many natural hazards that our city face every year.

As the leading organisation for disaster planning on the Gold Coast, we work with State and Federal emergency teams and the community to ensure our city's resilience to the effects of severe weather events like flooding.

Flood mitigation

Flood mitigation includes a range of measures designed to reduce the risk of flooding and flood hazards. These measures include ensuring habitable buildings are located away from flood risk area; or building infrastructure to reduce flood risk; or communicating flood risks to the community.

Some of the flood mitigation measures include building physical infrastructure such as dams, detention basins, flood channels and levees. This infrastructure can reduce peak flood levels and potential damage.
