The Nritya Bharati School of Kathak Dance is pleased to present Darbar: The Splendour of India's Royal Court Dances, choreographed and directed by Brisbane-based Kathak dancer, Namita Debroy.

Darbar (translated as "the court") is an exploration of classical Kathak dance that highlights the artistic renaissance which took place within the royal courts of Northern India, particularly during the 16th and 17th centuries. In her choreography, Namita seeks to portray the beauty and grandeur of the royal courts, while reinterpreting compositions that echo dance performances of a bygone era.

Kathak is among the major classical dance forms of India, featuring high-energy body and hand movements, rhythmic footwork emphasised by small bells around the ankles (ghungroo), and quick spins harmonised to the music. There is also an emphasis on facial expression and the eyes as a medium of communication.

This beautiful dance form has been admired by audiences around the world, and is being presented to the Gold Coast for the first time. It is best appreciated in live, intimate settings, and we welcome you to come and experience this graceful and high-energy performance first hand.

As part of the evening's entertainment, a darbar inspired selection of skilfully spiced, classic Indian appetisers will be available for purchase, including gluten free and vegan options.
