Job Matching ExpoGold Coast City Council will team with leading employment and government agencies to help match job seekers with employment opportunities when it hosts its third free Jobs Matching Expo. The Council's Economic Development Branch successfully matched 80 people with jobs at the inaugural expo in October last year. A second expo in March this year lined 200 people up with potential employment opportunities. A total of 21 exhibitors will be at the expo to provide information on what jobs are available and how to apply for them. The Expo will also offer free seminars on resume writing and interview techniques. Centrelink staff will be available to provide advice on appropriate government assistance for job seekers. The Expo will be on Tuesday 27 October at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre between 9am and 2pm. Can't make it to a branch library? Not able to get to one of our many branch libraries? Gold Coast Water has also implemented the Community Recycle Phone Program, 'Make your water mark!' Watersaver Education Program, School Mural Design Competition and Garden Watersaver Displays, as a part of National Water Week. For further information on Gold Coast Water's National Water Week activities or for some tips to help conserve water, please visit www.goldcoastwater.com.au Major works boost infrastructureThe final stage of the $14.5 million upgrade of Reserve Road, Upper Coomera has commenced as Council continues to roll out its major roads program and deliver more infrastructure to major growth areas. This will see a 1.9 kilometre stretch of Reserve Road from the Old Coach Road intersection to south of Brygon Creek Road upgraded to a four-lane arterial road to reduce traffic congestion in Upper Coomera. Existing remnant forests in the area will be protected, and a wildlife tunnel and funnelling fencing will also be included to provide safe passage for koalas and other wildlife. Due to the scale of the project, some short traffic stoppages during working hours are expected. However, one lane each way will generally remain open during the works. The project is expected to be completed in late 2010. SMART wins up second awardGold Coast City Council has taken out another award for its motorcycle rider training program SMART in this year's Queensland Road Safety Awards. It is the second time Council's SMART program has won the award in the Local Government Category. SMART was established to help reduce motorcycle accidents after research indicated that some riders involved in accidents may not have had the necessary skills to control their bikes. The program offers professional rider tuition on hazard perception training, low speed handling, braking, cornering and overall 'road craft'. Queensland Minister for Transport Rachel Nolan said winning the award for the same initiative twice was an outstanding achievement and praised Council for taking a lead role in road safety. For more details on SMART, visit www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/smart or phone Council's Road Safety Unit on (07) 5667 3624. The cost of one full day's tuition is $45 per rider. |
