New transport service for oncology patientsA new oncology patient transport service will soon be on the road after Council committed $30,000 in funding. The service will help patients access treatment by providing economical transport from their homes to medical facilities. Each year more than 2,700 people are diagnosed with cancer on the Gold Coast. Currently there are no transport services catering to the needs of these patients. In addition to Council funding, community contributions are needed. Donations can be directed to the Cancer Treatment Transport Fund via solicitors Gall, Standfield and Smith, PO Box 259 Southport 4215. Future-planning accolades keep flowing inCouncil's Bold Future project has taken top honours in the Queensland Public Sector Excellence Awards for Best Practice in Local Government. The awards recognise innovative improvements within Queensland's federal, state and local public sectors. The Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA) is the peak body representing more than 270,000 public sector professionals. Bold Future is one of the most extensive community consultation processes ever undertaken in Australia. It creates a blueprint for a socially, environmentally and economically sustainable city. More than 11,000 Gold Coast residents contributed to its development. At the awards, Gold Coast Water Infrastructure Planning Manager, Guillermo 'Bill' Capati was also named the Public Sector Professional of the Year. Bill has been part of the Gold Coast Water team for 10 years, contributing to major projects such as the planning of $1.6 billion worth of infrastructure assets. These have included water mains, pump stations, reservoirs and treatment plants. A list of the displays can be found at www.goldcoastcity.com.au from Thursday 10 December, or by phoning (07) 5581 6877. Bus tours depart from the Gold Coast Arts Centre each night at 7pm between 10 - 24 December. Bookings are essential with Murray’s Coaches on 13 22 51. The cost is $14 for adults and $9 for children with $1 from each ticket sold being donated to the 2009 Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. The 'Heritage Building Society Street Party' is a three-night celebration of the city's best street display. It will run from 21 to 23 December at 6pm - 9pm. There will be street entertainers, carol singers, face painters, Santa Claus and more. Congratulations are extended to all entrants who have worked tirelessly to build their displays. Collectively, these displays light the city with the magic of Christmas and bring much joy to the wider community. Currumbin Primary School's Friday Afternoon Art Group took top honours in the competition, based on the theme: 'Securing a Sustainable Water Future'. The new initiative is part of the 'Make your water mark!' Watersaver Education Program which aims to engage students and the school community in sustainability issues and raise awareness of conservation practices. The winning mural design will be painted on a Gold Coast Water pump station in West Burleigh. Public to have say on protecting golf courses![]() Gold Coast residents will soon have a say on plans to better protect the city's 29 golf courses from redevelopment for housing, commercial and other high-level issues. Draft amendments to Gold Coast City's Planning Scheme have received initial State Government endorsement, meaning Council is now able to ask the public for feedback. The city's golf courses are key sporting and tourism assets and an integral part of the Gold Coast Landscape, providing valuable open space and flood storage. While the proposed changes can't prevent future development proposals, they will significantly strengthen the city's planning scheme to better preserve these important sporting and open space assets. The draft amendments will be advertised between 9 November and 21 December and can be viewed at Council's Surfers Paradise, Nerang and Coolangatta offices and at Elanora and Helensvale Libraries. They will also be available for viewing on the web at www.goldcoastcity.com.au/planningscheme, by following the links to the planning scheme amendments page. Submissions must be in writing and received by Council by 21 December. |
