Bike Week is a state-wide initiative to promote and encourage more bicycling in our communities. Using a bike for travel to school, work, the shops or recreational pursuits delivers incredible benefits such as increased health and happiness, environmental sustainability and highlights the need for more efficient bicycle infrastructure and facilities. This year's Bike Week events include morning group rides, a speed dating bike event and even a social ride with Olympian Sara Carrigan. There's lots of freebies on offer too. Visit www.goldcoastcity.com.au/parks to find out about some of the great events for Gold Coast Bike Week. Help for barking mad dogsCelebrity animal behaviour consultant Dr Cam Day will come to the rescue of bored and lonely barking dogs around Elanora next month. The veterinary surgeon will lead Council's free bark-stopper seminar and residents with problem pooches are invited to attend on 16 April. Barking dogs are one of the most common reasons for disputes and disharmony between neighbours, and each year Council receives about 3500 noise nuisance complaints. The number of complaints about dogs barking dropped in the targeted areas by almost 40 per cent after the last series of seminars, while the number of phone complaints to Council fell by 32 per cent. Owners are responsible for their dog's behaviour and should ensure they are safe, healthy and well behaved. The seminars identify why dogs bark, what triggers their barking and how the problem can be tackled. The next bark-stopper seminar will be held on Friday 16 April at Elanora Community Centre - from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. For information or to reserve a place contact Council on (07) 5581 6664. Registration is essential. Win a bikeIf you love keeping up to date with what's happening on the Gold Coast, why not get on your bike and sign up to the Gold Coast parks enewsletter. If you subscribe to the enewsletter before 13 April, you will go into the draw to win one of five cool cruiser bikes. The parks enewsletter helps keep you informed about everything there is to see and do in our great city parks. Visit www.goldcoastcity.com.au/parks. New Robina - Southport bus service for cityA new Council funded bus service between Robina and Southport is the latest addition to the city's public transport network. Council has committed about $375,000 to trial the service until 30 June this year, which is being delivered in partnership with TransLink and Surfside Buslines. The new service, funded by the city's Transport Levy, will run in both directions every 30 minutes from 7am to 7pm on weekdays, via Bermuda Street and Bundall Road. The new route 747 will give passengers a one-seat journey between Robina train station, Robina Town Centre and Southport CBD, slashing around 15 minutes from the previous journey. Scholarships supporting young engineersA Council partnership with Griffith University to provide scholarships to attract young engineers is reaping rewards, with two students formally recognised at a recent Council meeting. Former scholarship recipient Jordan Cocks, who recently graduated, and latest recipient Kathryn McDonald, were presented with certificates. The Engineering Services Directorate Scholarship was introduced in 2005 in response to a report by Queensland's Institute of Engineers Australia which identified a lack of industry support for young engineers. Engineering Services has been working hard to make it a ‘scholarship of choice' among students at Griffith, by providing strong academic and financial support to the recipient. Learn about Whizzy's adventures during World Water DayWhizzy the water drop's incredible journeys will be shared at Gold Coast libraries for this year's International World Water Day on 22 March.
