Book review - Jack Daniels mysteries
The Jack Daniels mystery series has 5 titles all named after alcoholic beverages. This first book introduces the reader to Jacqueline Daniels, a female lieutenant dedicated to her job. She becomes the target of a sadistic killer after she begins investigating murders committed by a serial killer who goes by the name of The Gingerbread Man.
It's a cat and mouse game but that's not what makes this book interesting. Really, it's the witty and snappy dialogue that makes it a page-turner. It balances beautifully between disgusting descriptions and comedic moments, setting it apart from common detective capers. I particularly enjoyed this book because it differs from other detective novels I've read by mixing fear and humour. The Gold Coast City Council library service holds all titles in the series.

Winged Creatures - read the book, get ready for the film
It is an ordinary day when a deranged man goes on a rampage in a diner and randomly starts shooting customers. Here begins a powerful journey in which a group of strangers, the surviving customers, form a unique relationship with each other. Anne struggles to understand her dad's death, Jimmy turns mute, Charlie starts to gamble his savings away at the casino, Carla loses her ability to care for herself and her young son, and Dr. Laraby, a physician who failed to revive the shooting victims, turns to his wife as someone to 'save'. All struggle to live in the ordinary world.
Winged Creatures, written by Roy Freirich, is set out with chapters dedicated to each customer, as they describe their thoughts, emotions and activities after the shooting. I like this writing style. It's similar to The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas. Unlike The Slap, this book doesn't use vulgar language, making it pleasant to read. Not to ruin it for anyone, but although the characters are searching for closure, most don't find it. At first I was annoyed at this but came to realise closure can be an impossible ambition in some situations. This book has a great movie written all over it.

Book Coasters - what's it all about?
Book Coasters is a space for customers and library staff to share reviews, links, tips, tricks, how-to guides and information. It's an online book club in the form of a blog, where we can all share our thoughts on books we love - and those we don't. Library staff will frequently post interesting articles, but like any book club, it's all about discussion. We'd love to hear from you!
As well as providing a space for us to discuss books, there's also a range of information on Book Coasters especially for book lovers - from tips for running your own book club to a selection of resources for readers. Check it out at www.gcbooks.wordpress.com
Book Coasters book club August book - We Are Now Beginning Our Descent by James Meek, available from branch libraries in large print, audiobook and paperback format. People can follow along with this online book club, reading each month's title, and writing and reading reviews and posting comments to spark conversation.
