Green waste bin collection

For around $1 per week, you can have a 240 litre green waste bin at your home. All your garden clippings, palm fronds, leaves, branches and green waste can be collected every fortnight, saving you precious time.

Green waste bins are an easy and affordable way for residents and businesses to quickly and easily dispose of their green garden waste. The green waste bin is serviced fortnightly on the alternate week to the yellow lid recycling bin.

The green waste bin can accept grass clippings, palm fronds, prunings, weeds, leaves and small branches.

Both property owners and tenants can apply for this service. Fees apply for this service.

The service is currently restricted to urban properties of the Gold Coast. Check your service eligibility below.

Included suburbs: Arundel, Ashmore, Benowa, Biggera Waters, Bilinga, Broadbeach, Broadbeach Waters, Bundall, Burleigh Heads, Burleigh Waters, Carrara, Clear Island Waters, Coolangatta, Coombabah, Coomera, Currumbin, Helensvale, Highland Park, Hollywell, Isle of Capri, Kirra, Labrador, Main Beach, Mermaid Beach, Mermaid Waters, Merridown, Merrimac, Miami, Molendinar, Monterey Keys, Nobby Beach, Park Lake, Pacific Pines, Palm Beach, Paradise Point, Paradise Waters, Parkwood, Rainbow Bay, Robina, Runaway Bay, Sorrento, Southport, Sovereign Island, Studio Village, Surfers Paradise, The Spit, Tugun and Varsity Lakes.

Suburbs that are currently unable to participate in the green waste collection service: Advancetown, Alberton, Austinville, Bonogin Valley, Cedar Creek, Clagiraba, Currumbin Valley, Gaven, Gilberton, Guanaba, Kingsholme, Lower Beechmont, Luscombe, Mount Nathan, Natural Bridge, Neranwood, Norwell, Numinbah, South Moreton Bay Island, South Stradbroke Island, Sanctuary Cove, Springbrook, Stapylton, Tallebudgera Valley, Wolfdene, Wongawallan and Woongoolba.

Once the online form is submitted, property owners will be charged in their rates for the service from the date of bin delivery.

Tenants can pay in person at one of our administration centres or pay by post using the PDF form - Green waste service - rental properties (see payment instructions on the form).

* The $38.50 deposit is refundable following cancellation of service by the applicant and only after the bin has been retrieved by the City.

Rates and charges are reviewed annually, and the charge may vary in the next rating year.

Property owner registration process

  1. Check that your property address is included in the green waste service area.
  2. Submit an application online or call 07 5667 5976.
  3. If your property is within the suburbs for assessment area please submit an application online and a Waste Management Officer will review the property address and get back to you. You can also call 07 5667 5976.

Which week is the green waste bin collected?

The green waste bin is collected on the same day as the general waste bin, but on the alternate week to the yellow lid recycling bin. You can find out which week to place the green waste bin kerbside by using the online bin day finder. You can print out your individual recycling calendar from the online bin day finder or use the generic Recycling Calendar fridge card. Top tips for the kerbside green waste service

To ensure your green waste bin is serviced each fortnight:

  • place the bin kerbside the night before collection, or no later than 6am on the day of collection
  • the lid should be closed
  • do not over fill the bin
  • do not place soil, bark, treated timber, tree stumps, nappies, plastic bags or other inappropriate material in the green waste bin
  • ensure tree branches are less than 15 centimetres in diameter and no longer than 40 centimetres.

  • What is the green waste service?

    This is an optional service to collect green waste, operating fortnightly, on the alternate week to the yellow lid recycling bin.

  • What can I put in the green waste bin?

    The following items are accepted in the green waste bin:

    • garden prunings
    • grass clippings
    • shrubs (shake off the soil)
    • weeds and flowers (shake off the soil)
    • leaves and loose bark palm fronds (fronds must be cut so they can fit into the bin - they cannot be bent as they will become trapped as the bin is emptied into the truck)

  • What doesn't belong in the green waste bin?

    • plastic bags
    • general waste
    • nappies (not even compostable nappies)
    • yellow lid recyclables
    • kitchen waste, including fruit, vegetable and meat scraps
    • animal droppings
    • large logs, branches and stumps
    • garden hoses or tools
    • rocks and building materials
    • treated, composite or painted timber
    • potting mix, soil and ash
    • plant pots
    • hazardous waste
    • batteries or chemicals

    * Inclusion of these items in the green waste bin may result in the bin not being serviced.

  • What kind of bin do I get?

    The bin is 240 litre in capacity, with a natural green base and a lime green lid.

  • When do I get my new green waste bin?

    If your property is in an included suburb the green waste bin will be delivered within a week of application.

    If your property is within an assessment suburb and it is eligible for a service the green waste bin will be delivered within a week of application. However, if your property is not eligible you will be contacted by phone or email by a Waste Officer.

  • Should I bag my green waste?

    No, green waste should be placed loosely into the green waste bin.

  • When can I start to use the green waste bin?

    You can begin to use the green waste bin as soon as it is delivered to your property. You can find out which week to place the green waste bin kerbside by using the online bin day finder. You can print out your individual recycling calendar from the online bin day finder or use the generic Recycling Calendar fridge card.   • When is my green waste bin collected?

  • Can I put palm fronds into the green waste bin?

    Yes, but they must be cut to fit into the green waste bin with the lid closed. Palm fronds cannot be bent to fit into the bin as the fronds may block the collection truck once the lid is opened. (Palm fronds can be cut with secateurs)

  • If I live in an apartment, townhouse or unit can I order a green waste bin?

    If you live in an apartment, townhouse or unit, and have a Body Corporate, you will need to provide written approval from your Body Corporate before you can apply for a green waste service.

    However if a green waste bin is already serviced in your complex written Body Corporate approval is not required.

    Additionally, you will need to follow the application process appropriate for a property owner or a tenant.

  • When will I have to pay for the green waste bin?

    Property owner

    Depending on when you order the bin, you will either receive a notice within three weeks of ordering the bin; otherwise the charge for the service will be included in the next rate notice.

    Tenant

    If you wish to pay in person at one of our customer service centres or pay by post, complete the PDF form, 'Green waste service - rental properties'. If you wish to make a secure online payment, complete our online form. Once the payment is made, and the address confirmed eligible, a green waste bin will be delivered to the property address within a week.

  • If I move can I take the green waste bin with me?

    Property owner - No the bin service should be cancelled at the old property and application for the service at the new property made.

    Tenant - Yes, as long as you contact Waste Management to update property address details.

  • The green waste bin was missed – what do I do?

    If the green waste bin has been missed by the collection truck, please contact Waste Management on 07 5667 5976 and have the following information ready:

    • Your name, address and daytime phone contact number
    • The type of bin that was missed (general waste or recycling or green waste)
    • A possible reason why the bin may have been missed.
  • Where does the green waste go?

    Kerbside green waste will be recycled beneficially, either for mulch or to create 'green' energy.
