Intersection upgrade Coolangatta Road, Lord and Appel Streets, Coolangatta

Commencing: January 2018
Completion: March 2018
Total project cost: $730,000

Project information

The City of Gold Coast has been awarded funding from the Australian Government’s Black Spot Programme to improve road safety at the intersection of Coolangatta Road, Lord Street and Appel Street, Coolangatta. The intersection upgrade provides clear ‘right of way’ through Coolangatta Road, Lord Street and Appel Street, and improves pedestrian safety.

Construction details

  • Relocation of the zebra crossing to the eastern side of the intersection, closer to Coolangatta State School.
  • Relocation of the zebra crossing in Appel Street, 15 metres south of its current location, to improve sight lines and disability access.
  • New u-turn bays and turn lanes will be installed and traffic around the central median will be reduced to one lane.
  • Temporary removal of on street parking during construction.
  • A consistent 50 kilometre per hour speed limit will be implemented in the section of Coolangatta Road, between Miles Street and Haig Street.
  • Provision of new on road cycle lanes.
  • The north east corner of the intersection of Lord Street and Coolangatta Road will be permanently closed to traffic. Improved access for residents will be provided at the adjacent turn onto Coolangatta Road.

We are working to minimise disruptions, however local residents may notice noise and dust. Works are expected to take eight weeks, weather permitting.
