Green waste bin collection

For around $1 per week, you can have a 240 litre green waste bin at your home. All your garden clippings, palm fronds, leaves, branches and green waste can be collected every fortnight, saving you precious time.

Green waste bins are an easy and affordable way for residents and businesses to quickly and easily dispose of their green garden waste. The green waste bin is serviced fortnightly on the alternate week to the yellow lid recycling bin.

The green waste bin can accept grass clippings, palm fronds, prunings, weeds, leaves and small branches.

Both property owners and tenants can apply for this service. Fees apply for this service.

The service is currently restricted to urban properties of the Gold Coast and is available in 240 litre bin size only. Check your service eligibility below.

Which week is the green waste bin collected?

The green waste bin is collected on the same day as the general waste bin, but on the alternate week to the yellow lid recycling bin. You can find out which week to place the green waste bin kerbside by using the online bin day finder. You can print out your individual recycling calendar from the online bin day finder or use the generic Recycling Calendar fridge card. If you would like a pre-printed generic Recycling Calendar fridge card sent to you, order online or call 07 5667 5976.

To accommodate changes in traffic conditions and increased waste service demands, all bin collection times will change before, during and after the Games.

From 18 March onwards, to help ensure that your bin collection isn’t missed, please place your bins out the night before your normal service day, where our waste truck can access it easily. Bring your bin in as soon as you can after servicing.

Please be aware that due to changes in traffic conditions and increased waste service demands during this period, we won’t be able to return for missed services.

Top tips for the kerbside green waste service

To ensure your green waste bin is serviced each fortnight:

  • place the bin kerbside the night before collection
  • the lid should be closed
  • do not over fill the bin
  • do not place soil, bark, treated timber, tree stumps, nappies, plastic bags or other inappropriate material in the green waste bin
  • ensure tree branches are less than 15 centimetres in diameter and no longer than 40 centimetres.

Missed green waste bin collection

From 19 March to 20 April, inclusive, your bin collection could occur any time during the day or night of your normal bin collection day – please allow 24 hours after your normal collection day to determine whether the service has been completed.

If your bin was not collected and we can confirm there was a genuine missed service, we still cannot guarantee that we will be able to return for the missed service during GC 2018. If we do not return then:

  • you will need to wait until the next scheduled collection day if possible, or
  • take your green waste to your nearest waste and recycling centre for free (excluding Merrimac, which will be closed between 2 and 15 April).

We apologise for any disruption that you might experience and thank you for your understanding during this time.
