Music Action Plan – The Business of Music

The Business of Music is a new 12-week course starting Tuesday 9 July at the TAFE Coomera Campus, tailored for Gold Coast-based musicians, creatives and producers the critical business skills necessary to sustain a long and prosperous music career.

The course is a project-based group-mentoring program designed to teach the working musician the crucial skills involved in running a successful music business.

Topics you will learn about include:

  • common music business contracts
  • royalties and income streams
  • how copyright can work for you
  • keeping your books in order
  • taking the scary out of tax
  • how to market your project
  • how to distribute your music for streaming.

As you learn the material, you have the opportunity to apply it directly to your own project and learn how others are applying it to theirs.

The course is for the musician or creative who understands the importance of a strong network and the importance of continual professional development. In conjunction with learning content, and being mentored participants will receive access to a wide variety of networks and resources including a subscription to Music Inside Out, Australia’s leading online music industry professional development resource, and the opportunity to attend BIGSOUND the Southern Hemisphere’s largest music conference, where they will get the opportunity to network with like-minded industry peers and learn from the industry’s leading professionals.

Who can apply?

If you are a Gold Coast music industry professional looking to expand your horizons in the music business, whilst expanding your network and develop your practice, The Business of Music is the course for you. Up to 20 places are available for eligible applicants who can:

  • provide evidence of a minimum of two years professional activity
  • are a Gold Coast resident and
  • are an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

Support provided

The Business of Music is proudly delivered by TAFE Queensland, Gold Coast in collaboration with the City of Gold Coast's Music Action Plan 2021. The course is valued at $1340. Successful applicants will have the first $1000 supported by the Music Action Plan and must pay the remaining $340 directly to TAFE upon enrolment.

Key dates

Enrolments open 28 May and close 30 June.
Course commences Tuesday 9 July, 4pm – 6.30pm and continues for 12 weeks.
Course closes 1 October 2019.

About our Music Action Plan

The Music Action Plan 2021 provides a blueprint for the City that will positively impact the live music sector on the Gold Coast by providing access to resources, promotion of Gold Coast music nationally and internationally and stronger partnerships across all tiers of government, peak bodies, and private enterprise.

Central to the plan is a series of programs, including the EXCEED Program, that offers a range of initiatives and activities to support the development of the Gold Coast music industry. A key initiative of the EXCEED Program is The Business of Music course.
