Suntown Landfill to close

Gold Coast City Council today decided that normal landfill activity at Suntown will cease in 14 months, on 31 December 2010.

Community and Cultural Development Committee Chair, Cr Bob La Castra, said because closing Suntown would place extra strain on the city’s waste management network, it had been decided to allow residents to continue to deposit domestic waste there for 30 days of the year – but only until 28 February 2012.

“Residents will be able to take mixed waste to Suntown on weekends and public holidays during December, January and February, which is the peak period for the waste management network,” said Cr La Castra. “Hopefully, this will prevent lengthy delays for residents using waste transfer stations and landfills during the busiest time of the year. However, even this limited activity will cease on 28 February 2012.”

Area Councillor Margaret Grummitt, said today’s decision gave absolute certainty to the residents of Arundel, particularly to those who lived near the Suntown Landfill.

“They now know what is going to happen with this facility – and when,” said Cr Grummitt. “I am particularly pleased all these outcomes will be delivered during the current term of this Council. It provides another layer of certainty for residents.”

Cr Grummitt said when earthmoving and profiling works were complete, the final level of the western batter of the landfill would be up to three metres lower than the current highest point.

Mayor Ron Clarke said today’s Council decision had been ‘the right one for the community’.

“I am very pleased for residents who live near the landfill,” he said. “This is the certainty they have been wanting and I am delighted they now have it.”
