A Gold Coast family that has contributed to the City’s ‘world class liveability’, charities and not-for-profit organisations over two generations, has had the Broadbeach Soccer Oval (Broadbeach Park) named in its honour.

The Nikiforides Family Park sign was today officially unveiled by Mayor Tom Tate and Division 10 Councillor Paul Taylor.

More than 100 family members, friends, business, community, political and sporting guests shared Maria Nikiforides birthday cake and well wishes as part of the ceremony.

Mayor Tate said the park naming was in recognition of the significant contribution the Nikiforides family – father Bill and more recently Con – had made to the Gold Coast ‘becoming the liveable world- class city of today’.

“The Nikiforides family is widely known and respected in our city, and beyond. They have over the past 30-plus years made an enormous contribution to the economic, social and cultural development of the Gold Coast,” said Cr Tate.

“They are in fact among the foundation visionaries who helped to create what is now Australia’s sixth largest city. No challenge is too big when it comes to creating outstanding infrastructure or assisting local charities and not-for-profit organisations.

“The Nikiforides family embodies the priorities for our city - a better, safer place that connects communities through built and open spaces. The Nikiforides Family Park plays a great part in bringing together the community through sport and recreation.”

Councillor, Paul Taylor said the park was popular with sporting groups, local families and visitors.

“It’s a great park, next to the Broadbeach Surf Life Saving and across from a fantastic beach. It caters for soccer, croquet and lawn bowls as well as providing a wonderful place for families and kids to have a picnic and a fun day out,” said Cr Taylor.

The Nikiforides Group moved to South East Queensland in 1978. Its flagship property development Niecon Developments won many industry awards for construction, design and engineering excellence.

Niecon sponsors many Gold Coast community organisations and initiatives.
