Roadside dining

The primary purpose of regulating footpath/roadside dining is to ensure these activities are carried out in a safe manner for pedestrians and diners. City of Gold Coast is required to monitor the standard of operations in food premises that provide footpath/roadside dining. Compliance with the City's requirements will assist you in providing a safe footpath/roadside dining environment for your customers.

How to apply

Before submitting your application, you should ensure the site has the appropriate development approval to prevent your application being delayed. Depending on the type, size and intended use of any permanent buildings and structures, building approval and certification from a building certifier may be required.

Once this has been confirmed, complete and submit a roadside dining permit application form.

The following documentation must be submitted with an application for a roadside dining permit:

  • Public liability insurance certificate (this must be for at least $10 million and the Council of the City of Gold Coast must be noted as an interested party in respect of operation of roadside dining)
  • detailed drawings of structure(s), such as removable umbrellas, and/or ground installations
  • Energex letter of no objection (required for low voltage electrical installations)
  • awning certification, including an inspection report prepared by a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) competent in structural engineering
  • adjacent premises owner/operator letter of no objection
  • fire egress pathway requirements (new installations only) – plans by a Building Services Authority licensed building certifier identifying fire exits.

If you are intending to place removable umbrella structure(s) and/or electrical installations in this roadside dining area, you will also be required to complete and submit a Removable umbrella structure/s and electrical installations application form.

To avoid delays in your application, please ensure any supporting information is submitted with the completed application form.

No fees are required with the submission of the application. Roadside dining fees are invoiced monthly and vary depending on the area location of your roadside dining. Details of these fees can be found in the City’s Register of fees and charges. Bonds that may be required for structures, devices or electrical installations will be determined at the time of initial assessment.
