Coastal Community Education Program
The Gold Coast City Council coordinates a number of coastal community engagement programs for students and the community to learn about coastal processes, the abundance of sea life and vegetation, existing as part of a precious beach eco-system.CoastEd
Council and the Griffith Centre for Coastal Management has developed the CoastEd Program for both primary and secondary school students.
Students will learn about our precious coastal strips in an outdoor environment while taking part in dune planting or beach clean-up activities. An educational CD-ROM is also available for purchase. Order forms are available for download in Adobe PDF and MS Word formats:

BeachCare Program
BeachCare is a program developed by Council to involve the community in decision making about the management of the ocean beaches on the Gold Coast.
Community groups can be involved in the following:
- clean up of rubbish from beach areas
- removal of weeds and other undesirable plants from dunal areas
- planting of dunal vegetation
- planning of future beach areas including boardwalks, showers, steps and fences
- applying for funding from State and Federal Governments and private business and service groups
- involvement in education programs for schools and the wider community.
Anyone can be involved - individuals living near beaches, individuals who visit beaches, residents, clubs, scouts, guides or school groups, service, sporting, environmental, social, business or religious groups.
Where and when
Gold Coast Beach Care Groups have been formed to preserve beaches from The Spit in the North to Coolangatta in the South. They organise beach care activities on a regular basis and are always looking for new members. Council also forms new groups on a regular basis.

Coast Care
If you would like to get involved in coastal management activities, the Federal Government Envirofund grant scheme available to support community groups.
Funding has been made available for various coastal projects including the protection of sea turtle nesting sites, construction of interpretive trails for coastal areas and the monitoring of seadragon, grey nurse shark and seagrass populations.
Council encourages local groups to submit proposals for Envirofund grants and assist with in-kind support, technical information and the completion of applications.
