Disaster recovery

The aim of the recovery process is to increase the capacity of organisations to undertake short, medium and long-term activities enabling a timely and effective response to the recovery of the disaster-affected community.

The disaster is not considered over until the community has undergone renewal to a point where community and infrastructure services are restored as close as possible to former levels.

In the recovery phase, Council, in conjunction with the Department of Communities, has a responsibility for disaster management within its boundaries based on its capability and core functions. Council may also have significant involvement with neighbouring local governments and may receive support and/or work closely with State and Commonwealth agencies.

The recovery extends to the care, safety and the health and well being of affected communities. For residents to return to affected communities, services must be made available to meet the essential personal and community needs.

Key functions

One key function for Council involves undertaking extensive community consultation and engagement at each stage of renewal. This communication includes keeping the surrounding communities informed of any proposal to restore parts of the affected local areas.
