Storms
It is vitally important that all residents seriously consider the precautionary measures they need to take to protect themselves, their families and homes from severe storms.
Flooding caused by storm tides and rain accounts for 27 per cent of all severe weather damage to homes in South East Queensland and poses significant risks to the safety of residents.
The City is working to reduce the risks through a major program of stormwater drainage works and by implementing awareness campaigns.
However, all residents need to be aware of the dangers and take steps to ensure their own safety.

During a storm
- Listen to local radio
- Stay inside, away from windows and flying debris
- If necessary, cover yourself with a mattress, blanket or doona
- If outdoors, find shelter but not under a tree
- If you leave, tell people!
- If in a vehicle, stop clear of trees, power lines and streams if flooding is likely
- Empty freezer and refrigerator, leaving doors open
- Secure personal valuables
- Turn off electricity, gas and water
If you're home when a storm passes through, be sure to stay inside away from windows.
- Close curtains and blinds.
- Ensure pets and animals are secure.
- Turn off electrical appliances.
- Don't use landline telephones (mobile phones are safe to use during a storm).
If caught outside, seek shelter in a vehicle or building but don't shelter under trees.
If driving during a storm, pull over and park until the storm passes. Remember to stay clear of trees, powerlines, storm water drains and streams.
After the storm has passed, motorists should not drive into water of unknown depth and current.
After a storm
First, assess the storm damage to your home and property. Then determine which agency can assist you and call for assistance.
