Macintosh Island Park Master Plan
Macintosh Island Park is a regional park that provides a unique recreational opportunity for local residents, tourists and the greater Gold Coast region. The park is located adjacent to the Gold Coast Highway between Narrowneck and Paradise Waters.Since its inception as a cleared sandy leftover space following the construction of the Gold Coast Highway in 1972, Macintosh Island Park has been developed into an oasis from the busy urban environment for locals and visitors.
The park is regarded as one of our city's most popular open spaces, which hosts major events each year that attract thousands to the region. The Master Plan will deliver a park that creates an experience for everyone who visits or uses the park.
A comprehensive master planning and community consultation program was conducted between May 2005 and November 2006, which involved the local community and key stakeholders.
The information gathered via these community consultation sessions, workshops and surveys has assisted Council in the drafting of the Master Plan, which was adopted at a Full Council meeting held Monday 11 December 2006.
Council will ensure a strong identity, character and theme is developed for the park that respects and celebrates the park's cultural, historical and environmental values.
A list of park improvements will include upgraded facilities and family friendly areas, a centrally located environmental-based adventure playground, pathways suitable for residents of all ages and mobility levels and the rehabilitation of the remnant rainforest on Narrowneck and Wildlife Island.
Works
A staged process of development will be used to implement the Master Plan over the next two to three years. This will guarantee continued access to the area for local residents and visitors.
Stage two developments of the Master Plan will commence in March 2009 and will be phased over an 18 month period. Works include upgraded pathways and new amenities, with some furniture upgrades. Interim maintenance measures have been undertaken along the creek, with plans in place to upgrade the area in the future.
Council apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused during these works. Our effective construction management procedures will ensure minimal impacts on residents, park users and visitors - your patience during these works is appreciated.
