Bicycle Network Operation Plan (BNOP) Survey
Purpose
The main objective of the BNOP is to help provide a comprehensive bicycle network throughout the city. An improved bicycle network will offer a feasible and safe transport alternative and improve recreational opportunities for the residents and visitors of the Gold Coast City.
The aim of the survey is to gain information (survey data) from the community and in particular school bicycle users that will assist in the overall development of the BNOP. The plan will enable Council to build on existing bicycle networks and also to achieve better connectivity, by addressing the missing links in the existing bicycle networks. Council also aims to provide safe and direct access to key destinations, and to achieve consistency in bikeway design treatments.
The specific objectives of the school survey is to identify:
- the proportion of students who cycle to school
- key cycling destinations (parks, schools, community facilities) and the routes used to get to these destinations
- any difficulties experienced with existing bicycle routes
- the reasons why students do not ride a bicycle to school regularly
Background information
The city’s bicycle network coverage has developed significantly since 1998 and now covers a total distance of approximately 600 kilometres. In the last five years, major improvements have been secured for commuter cyclists with the provision of direct on-road bike lanes, widened shoulders and advisory treatments linking key destinations. Ongoing development of coastal bikeways has created a beachfront cycling corridor (Darren Smith Cycle Route), capitalising on the city’s unique locational attributes.
