Background
I grew up in Brisbane, but have lived in Burleigh Waters since 1997. Prior to being elected Councillor for Division 12 in 2004 I worked with Qantas for 15 years and the last position I held was Supervisor of the Qantas terminal at Coolangatta airport.
My keen interest in urban design and land use planning has developed over the last four years in my first Council term. Since I was young I was interested in politics and current affairs, so I always thought that I would end up standing for public office. The reason that I entered politics, and particularly Local Government, was a desire to be involved in the decision making process for my local area. So it made sense to me that I should direct my attention to Council as it is, in my opinion, pure democracy in action.
Each day I like to start the morning with a surf at Burleigh point whenever possible. In my opinion it is good to have a balanced lifestyle and daily exercise helps me to clear my mind and stay healthy. As a surfer I take an interest in coastal issues and I believe that the beach lifestyle forms a significant part of the fabric of our culture on the Gold Coast.
The future that I see for this city is one where our time and energy is concentrated in our local communities. I want to strive to help to model a decentralised city where people can live, work, learn, and play locally. This may be a long term goal, but it is one that is worth pursuing.
