Background and qualifications
First elected in 2004, Susie Douglas was a trained nurse, midwife, Team Leader for Life Education and owner-operator of an accredited nanny school. Councillor Susie Douglas has spent most of her working days caring for the health and well being of people.
Susie Douglas attended Allenstown State Primary School, completed year 12 at Rockhampton Girls Grammar School in 1975, and then trained as a nurse at Brisbane's St Andrews War Memorial Hospital. In 1981 Susie completed her midwifery (double certificate registered nurse) at the Gold Coast Hospital, where she delivered more than 30 Gold Coast babies and was present at the birth of hundreds more.
Married to Dr Alexander Douglas in 1983, they lived in Townsville and Brisbane, before settling on the Gold Coast in 1988. They have four children, two working, one at university and one in secondary school.
Interests
In her spare time, Councillor Douglas loves to read, especially about history, politics and biographies.
High on her list of priorities are catching up with her 'very large extended family' and listening to classical music.
For many years Councillor Douglas has been involved with community and church groups, and believes that closer, better communities are built through strong friendships and neighbourhoods.
