Enjoying Burleigh Oceanway
The Gold Coast Oceanway is a 36 kilometre network of shared use pathways making improved lineal connection possible along the Gold Coast coastal environs.
Upon completion, the Oceanway aims to provide continuous accessible pavements from Southport Seaway (The Spit) in the north, to the southern end of the Gold Coast Point Danger on the New South Wales state border.
Features
To date 18.3 kilometres have been constructed along the beachfront: The Oceanway is constructed with:
- a 3.5 metre wide concrete pavement
- compliance with Disability Discrimination Act requirements
- outdoor furniture including seats, showers, lighting, drinking fountains, rubbish bins and directional signage
- designated beach access points
- landscape improvements including dunal regeneration
Meeting community needs
The Gold Coast Oceanway provides access for both walkers and cyclists, including greater opportunities for disabled access to experience the beauty of our beaches.
Council's objective of extending the Oceanway along the beachfront, has been supported by community wishes expressed during the surveys that helped determine Council's Bold Future Vision for the city.
The Oceanway seeks to achieve the objectives of the draft policy Connecting SEQ 2031.(An integrated Regional Transport Plan for South East Queensland) http://www.connectingseq.qld.gov.au/ and the Qld Coastal Protection Act (1995).

The pathways provide healthy and environmentally-friendly ways for pedestrians and cyclists to explore the renowned beaches of the Gold Coast.
Increasing numbers of people are enjoying sustainable journeys along our Oceanway. Council has an investment program to improve the quality and capacity of the Oceanway to encourage healthier and more sustainable behaviour from coastal visitors.
The Oceanway provides access to a wide range of coastal environments including spectacular coastal vistas, headlands, mangroves, dunes and Littoral Rainforest.

Oceanway Projects
Tugun to Bilinga Oceanway – Planning Phase
This proposed new section of Oceanway will connect the existing Oceanway path at Bilinga Surf Life Saving Club to the existing Oceanway footpath at O'Connor Park, Tugun. On completion of this section, approximately eight kilometres of beachfront Oceanway will be serving the community in the southern suburbs of the Gold Coast. Surfers South Oceanway – Detailed Design Phase
A new section of Gold Coast Oceanway path will be constructed between Clifford and Fern Streets in Surfers Paradise. Surfers South Oceanway Planning is underway to extend the Surfers South Oceanway from Fern Street to First Avenue Broadbeach.
Broadbeach North Oceanway - Completed
Works were completed in 2008 on a new section of Oceanway connecting central Broadbeach with Broadbeach north. Features include outdoor furniture, lighting, beach entry points and beach showers. This section will link with the proposed Surfers South Oceanway providing the community with access between Broadbeach to Surfers Paradise.
Snapper Rocks Oceanway Works - Completed
A new section of Gold Coast Oceanway path has replaced the existing boardwalk at Snapper Rocks. The ageing boardwalk was structurally unsound and did not meet current disability standards. Snapper Rocks Works
Coolangatta to Bilinga Oceanway - Completed
Works commended in October 2008 to extend the Oceanway through Rainbow Bay, Greenmount, Coolangatta, Kirra and by 2010 the Oceanway had reached the Bilinga Surf Life Saving Club.
Kurrawa Pratten Park Master Plan - Completed
Over recent years the Oceanway has been improved through Kurrawa Pratten Park and extended northwards to First Avenue Broadbeach.
Main Beach to Sea World Oceanway - Completed
The Gold Coast Oceanway has been improved through Main Beach parklands and has been extended northwards past Sheraton Mirage to the Seaworld Carpark.. For details, visit the Mirage to Sea World Oceanway page. Mirage to Sea World Oceanway
Miami to Burleigh Oceanway - Completed
Over recent years the Oceanway has been improved along the Miami and Burleigh Esplanades and extended eastward to the entrance of Burleigh National Park.. Council engaged the community in October 2006 regarding future development of the Burleigh foreshore. Burleigh Central Oceanway
