What happens to my donation?
When we take your blood, it is separated into three basic components. Red Blood Cells are used to control bleeding in patients during surgery, after an accident or to treat anemia, they last 42 days.
Platelets help your blood clot, and are often used to control bleeding in patients with Leukaemia or for a Bone Marrow Transplant. They last five days after donation.
Plasma is used to make products that help thousands of people, from those with severe burns, patients with haemophilia or cancer and suppressed immune systems to newborn babies. When frozen, it can be stored for up to one year.
