Palm Beach Parklands Master Plan - transformation gets underway
Gold Coast City Council and residents of Palm Beach have shaped an exciting plan to create a high quality family-friendly parkland at the junction of Gold Coast Highway and Thrower Drive, Palm Beach.
The transformation of the Palm Beach Parklands into a superb recreational area for families is under way, with works beginning on the $3.5 million makeover in February 2007.
A golden opportunity to create the facility was presented when the RSL surrendered to the State Government its lease over the valuable parcel of foreshore land, on the condition that Council used the site to create a family friendly park with a kiosk/cafe and community space that everyone could enjoy.
Local residents have played a key role in shaping the project, with the wishes of the majority of the community being incorporated into the master plan for the facility.
Widespread community consultation with meetings, open days and surveys distributed to 8000 residents provided valuable input into the master plan to give residents a strong sense of ownership of the area when the redevelopment is complete.
The master plan demonstrates a complex understanding of the area and identifies environmental, social and economic requirements, as well as recreational aspirations of the community.
The plan includes a new playground, green space in which families can play, pathways, a cycle route, kiosk, community meeting rooms, disabled access to the lagoon, upgraded toilet facilities and new amenities at the northern end of the park to cater for dog walkers.
The Oceanway path will run through the park, connecting it with beaches to the north and south, with access to the lagoon off the mouth of Currumbin Creek being maintained during the redevelopment.
Council is doing everything possible to minimise disruption for regular users of the parklands. However, it is hoped residents of the area will see the end result of the project as being well worth any short-term inconvenience.
A staged process of development will be used to create the parklands over the next two to three years to ensure continuous access to the area for local residents and visitors, and to comply with budgetary and construction requirements.
