Surfers Paradise

As the celebrated heart of the Gold Coast, Surfers Paradise plays a vital role in helping to create a Bold Future for the city.

Surfers Paradise has been an iconic tourist destination since the 1950's and continues to attract nearly 20,000 overnight visitors a day.

It is home to more than 20,000 permanent residents and 3,700 businesses with the residential population set to swell to 38,700 by 2031.

In its role as an entertainment precinct and tourist destination the precinct experiences a number of unique social, economic and planning issues which will continue to be relevant as urbanisation and visitation increases. Council in partnership with other levels of government and the community, continues to revitalise the precinct and embrace future opportunities to position Surfers Paradise as a globally recognised tourist destination.

Improvements such as the foreshore redevelopment have already sent a strong signal locally and globally that Surfers Paradise has started a journey of transformation and regeneration.

Surfers Paradise Vision

In February 2011 Council invited residents, businesses, visitors and stakeholders to share their vision for Surfers Paradise to 2040.

The community’s vision for Surfers Paradise is:

Surfers Paradise is the heart of the Gold Coast and an international tourist destination where people come to visit and live to discover a relaxed urban lifestyle that is fun and entertaining, stylish and cultured on the shores of our world famous beach.

This vision is supported by six themes which align to the city's Bold Future.

Surfers Paradise Strategic Action Plan 2010-2020

To make the vision a reality, the Surfers Paradise Strategic Action Plan 2010-2020 details a number of short, medium and long term projects. The plan establishes an integrated framework to priorities and coordinate projects across Council to enhance outcomes for the precinct and provide cost savings for the community. The action plan is endorsed by the Heart of the City Advisory Committee and Council on a regular basis.

Heart of the City Advisory Committee

In 2008, Council formally established the Heart of the City Advisory Committee to advise and recommend initiatives and actions for Council to pursue to enhance the Surfers Paradise precinct.

The committees objectives include identifying and progressing economic, cultural, social, planning and environmental opportunities and strengthening the image of Surfers Paradise as an international city.
