Gold Coast kids will get an insight into being a Commonwealth Games competitor when Celebrate Gold Coast returns to the city in 2017.

The family-friendly event, which highlights what makes the Gold Coast great, will feature plenty of free interactive sporting events that are sure to wear the kids out.

Held at the Gold Coast's Sports and Leisure Centre at Carrara, the day will also boast live entertainment, a line-up of food trucks, an array of active and healthy activities, a wellness market, fitness demonstrations and a Ninja Warrior-style obstacle course.

Before the day is over, the National Basketball League (NBL) will return to the city with an official game of the 2017-18 season, when the Brisbane Bullets take on Melbourne United in the Gold Coast's world-class competition facilities. Tickets for the NBL game are available through Ticketek.

The event will take place on 28 October from 11am to 4pm with the basketball tipping off at 4.30pm.

Celebrate is part of the City of Gold Coast's Game On initiative, which encourages the community to embrace the excitement and enthusiasm of the Commonwealth Games.

Sporting activities featured at the event will include squash, tennis, table tennis, netball, bowls, cricket, basketball and athletics.

Competitions and activities

Honda Civic VTI Auto Hatch

To add to the fun and games, competitions will be held throughout the day with some great prizes up for grabs including the chance to win a new Honda Civic VIT Auto Hatch in the basketball half-court shot competition sponsored by Von Bibra Auto Village (terms and conditions available upon entry). The competition will be open for entries from 11am to 3.50pm, with the winner drawn at 4pm.

There will also be an inflatable obstacle course, rock climbing wall and mechanical surfboard for the young ones to tackle.

Gold Coasters can receive a special discount for NBL tickets thanks to the Brisbane Bullets. Watch the Brisbane Bullets take on Melbourne United in the Gold Coast's world-class sporting facilities.

Parking

Parking will be unavailable for the general public at the venue.

Free general public parking is available across the road from the venue at Alabaster Drive. Pedestrians can then cross the road to the venue.

Alternative free public parking is available down Birmingham Road at Emmanuel College. Pedestrians can then reach the venue in approximately 10 to 15 minutes walking.

  • Why the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre?

    The Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre offers attendees an insight into the newly developed Commonwealth Games facility. It is set to provide world-class competition and training facilities capable of hosting international sporting events like the badminton, weightlifting and wrestling competitions during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.  

  • Is there parking?

    Parking will not be available for the general public at the venue (Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre). Only permit holders will be able to park at Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre upon displaying their permit.

    Free general public parking is available across the road from the venue at Alabaster Drive. Pedestrians can then cross the road to the venue.

    Alternative public parking, also free, is available on Birmingham Road at Emmanuel College. Pedestrians can reach the venue in approximately 10 to 15 minutes. 

  • What public transport will get me there?

    Buses travel to and from the venue – check out translink.com.au to plan your journey.  

  • Can I bring alcohol?

    No. 

  • Can I refill my water bottle for free?

    Yes you can – look out for the water truck and bring your own water bottle to refill for free all day. 

  • Can I bring my pet?

    We don’t encourage pet attendance at our events. 

  • What if it rains?

    If the event is cancelled due to wet weather or for any other reason, we will update the Facebook event page. 

  • What time is the event?

    11am to 4pm with basketball tipping off at 4.30pm.
