Free cycling workshops

City of Gold Coast (City) is offering a series of free workshops to help you enjoy the many benefits that cycling provides. We have cycle workshops for every age and ability: from children and adults riding for the first time to advanced cyclists and those who simply want to enjoy an easy Sunday social ride. 

All workshops are facilitated by some of the most experienced cyclists in Australia and are all Cycling Australia accredited instructors. They will cover cyclist rights and responsibilities, interaction with other road users, visibility and shared road use.

Booking information

Grab your friends, family or workmates and hop on your bike. All the cycling workshops are free. Bookings are required. Email activetravel@goldcoast.qld.gov.au with your details and which session you would like to attend or phone our Active Travel team on 07 5582 8677. Bookings to be made weekdays between 8am and 4.30pm.

Absolute beginners on bikes

This beginner’s workshop is designed for adults aged 18 years and over who have never ridden a bike before. With no more than three people to a workshop, we guarantee you'll be riding in no time.

Better bike maintenance

Keep your bike safe and in shape. Learn valuable tips and be shown how to clean your bike, repair punctures, adjust your brakes and maintain the chain. Designed for all ages, including family groups. Children are welcome if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Riding with the gals

Mums, bubs, girlfriends, aunts and grandmothers are encouraged to join this bike ride and skills workshop. Enjoy the outdoors while on your bike and discover our local cycling network. Children are welcome if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Sunday social rides

Join us and explore our great cycle network on this easy Sunday social ride. We’ll cruise along off-road cycle paths and quiet roads. Designed for all ages, including family groups. Children are welcome if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Commuter cycle training - intermediate

Learn to ride the roads confidently, safely and become a better cyclist. This workshop is designed for intermediate cyclists aged 15 years old and over.

Commuter cycle training - advanced

An advanced cycling workshop with Olympic gold medallist, Sara Carrigan. This workshop takes place on the road, in real life traffic scenarios meaning you will become a confident cycling commuter, learning advanced bicycle handling techniques and valuable safety tips. This workshop is designed for cyclists aged 15 years old and over.

Training wheels to two wheels course

This workshop teaches children aged four years and over how to advance from training wheels to two wheels. Children must bring their own two-wheeled bike (with or without training wheels), helmet and be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Children's beginner cycling course

Following on from training wheels to two wheels, this course teaches children basic bike control skills to ride confidently in a traffic-free environment. Children must be four years and over and be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Children's intermediate cycling course

This course is designed for children aged six years and over and will teach bike handling skills and road awareness to enable them to ride safely in low traffic environments, on footpaths, bike paths and quiet streets. Children are welcome if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

All workshops are facilitated by some of the most experienced cyclists in Australia and are all Cycling Australia accredited instructors. These are some of our experienced instructors:

Jenny Alcorn

Jenny Alcorn is a former professional triathlete winning gold in the 1992 World Duathlon Championships. Jenny has 30 years’ experience in the sport and has been coaching for the past 20 years at all levels of the sport.

Her passion is to develop the love of cycling within the wider community by increasing skill, technique and confidence.

Sara Carrigan

Sara Carrigan is an Olympic gold medallist in cycling, has been inducted into the Sporting Hall of Fame and recently became a first time mum.

With 20 years' cycling experience, Sara aims to help individuals enjoy their cycling and all the benefits that come with it, without compromising safety to themselves or others on the road.

Chris Thompson

Chris Thompson is a former State Champion road cyclist who has been coaching and instructing cyclists of all abilities for the past 16 years. He conducts programs, sessions and workshops for kids and adults from beginners through to elite riders.

Chris is passionate about promoting the enjoyment of cycling attained through developing skills and confidence on the bike.
