Hot/cold recovery pools

Hot/cold recovery also known as hot/cold therapy is commonly used after training sessions or races.

How it works

The cold pool/immersion causes the blood vessels to constrict or vasoconstriction. The hot pool/immersion causes the blood vessels to dilate or vasodilatation.

The repeated change from cold to hot means the blood vessels dilate and constrict, one after the other during the immersion period creating a pumping or shunting effect which helps to collect and then clear the waste products from the muscles and pump them back to the heart for oxygenation.

Less waste product pooling in the muscles means improved recovery meaning you will be fresher and ready to start your next session.

When to use hot/cold recovery therapy

The hot/cold recovery method will always be more beneficial than no recovery at all, but will be especially effective after hard training, races or swimming sessions whereby you accumulated a lot of lactate.

User requirements

User requirements will vary. Please consult your coach or trainer before using the hot/cold recovery baths as part of a training program.

Recovery pool guidelines

  • Shower before and after session
  • Use the toilet before entering the pool.
  • No food or drink permitted in the recovery area.
  • Correct attire (swimmers/bathers) must be worn. No other clothing or nudity permitted.
  • Remove strappings before entering and dispose of correctly.
  • It is recommended that hot pool use does not exceed 15 minutes at a time.
  • Certain medical conditions may produce adverse effects. Please consult a medical professional before use if you have any concerns.
  • Children under the age of 16 are not permitted unless under direct supervision.
  • Unsupervised use of the recovery facilities is not permitted.

Do not

  • put your head under the water
  • use the recovery pools if you have a cold, virus, diarrhoea, open wound, bruising, recent injury, heart conditions, under the influence of drugs and alcohol or if pregnant
