Tracking the benefits of light rail

The Gold Coast's G:link light rail service has now started, the culmination of 10 years of planning and four years of construction, and the City of Gold Coast is ready to track the impact of trams on the life of our city.

The trams are expected to not only improve the city’s public transport, but have positive spin-offs for our community, economy and environment.

In the first project of its kind in Australia, the City of Gold Coast will monitor and measure how light rail affects the city through the Building Our City – Light Rail Corridor Report.

The project will look at all aspects of life along the 13 kilometre light rail route from the Gold Coast University Hospital to Broadbeach, including community, economic and environmental impacts.

Some key findings about the Light Rail Corridor include:

  • There are 249 pieces of playground equipment and 10,898 street trees.
  • There is 248,000sqm of office space and the top three industries of employment are hospitality, health and retail.
  • 112,000 people attended the Surfers Paradise Festival in March-April 2013.
  • There are 48.1 kilometres of off-road bicycle routes.
  • 77 per cent of work trips are taken by car.

We will learn from these findings and make changes to the future City Plan to maximise the benefits of some of the impacts or minimise the effects of others.

The findings will also help us plan for the next stages of the light rail network as envisaged in the City’s Transport Strategy 2031.

Monitoring will take place every two years to build up a picture of how aspects of life are changing along the light rail route.
