International protocol

Protocol is a set of formalities and courtesies and is especially important in official situations like business meetings, ceremonies and events that involve representatives from other countries.

The rules of protocol can differ significantly between countries, religions and regions so it is important to familiarise yourself with the protocol of the country you are dealing with. Even small things that might not seem significant can influence the outcome of a business meeting.

The Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) provides a good overview of the business etiquette of different countries.

View the Queensland Government's Guide to State Protocols on the Department of the Premier and Cabinet website, to read more about business etiquette.
