Language assistance

National Interpreter SymbolIf you need an interpreter please call the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) on 131 450 to speak to a City officer. To use this service you will need to tell them your preferred language. This is a free service for City-related business.

Readspeaker can be used to translate content on this website into languages available in Google Translate. Simply highlight the text you want translated, click the 'Translate' option in the pop-up menu, and select the language you would like to translate the text into. You can then read and/or listen to the translated text in the new language. Refer to the Readspeaker section on this page for more information.

National Relay Service

International Symbol for DeafnessPeople who are deaf or have a hearing or speech impairment can call us through the National Relay Service (NRS). Give the City of Gold Coast number, 1300 465 326, as the number you want to call.

Font size

Text needs to be able to be scaled so that it can be read easily by all people. In most cases, browsers allow you to use the CTRL and + keys together to zoom into a web page, and the CTRL and - keys to zoom out. This will magnify all elements on the page, including text, to make it easier to read.

Navigation using a screen reader

Our website also offers a menu for screen readers. Use this to skip to key content on the site, including menus and other navigation elements such as footer links.

ReadSpeaker is a tool which can read text aloud to you. You don't have to download anything to use this tool. Using ReadSpeaker may help you understand website information more easily.

Listen to the page

To listen to the content on a web page, click the 'Listen' button located at the top right of the page, just under the banner image. The control panel will appear and ReadSpeaker will automatically start reading the web page text out loud.

In the control panel you can:

  • pause the reading
  • stop the reading
  • rewind and fast forward the reading
  • adjust the volume
  • download the reading for the entire page as an MP3 file
  • customise the settings by clicking on the settings cog icon.

Listen to selected text

You can listen to as much or as little of the page as you like.

Simply select the text that you want to listen to, then press the pop-up listen button which appears next to the mouse pointer when you make your selection. When you click the pop-up listen button, the control panel will appear and ReadSpeaker will automatically start reading your selected text.

Settings

In the settings menu you can:

  • choose whether you want the text highlighted word by word and/or sentence by sentence as you listen, or turn off the highlighting
  • choose whether you want the pop-up listen button shown when text is selected
  • choose whether you want the reading speed to be slow, medium or fast.
