Generate GC Program 2023-24

The Generate GC Program is a City of Gold Coast initiative produced by Situate Art in Festivals. It is designed to support the development of Gold Coast artists working in any artform, seeking to develop creative acumen through the generation of ideas within community and place.

Artists undertake a competitive application and selection process led by the Generate GC team and the City.  Successful artists who participate in the program join a cohort of local creatives who are supported to expand their practice and to connect with established artists on the Gold Coast.  Artists are paid to participate in the program and can apply for additional support for the research and development of an idea.

The two key phases of the program include:

Phase 1 – Labs
This phase includes two intensive creative labs featuring presentations, panels, and workshops. They are led by industry leaders, aimed at expanding and provoking ideas.

Phase 2 – Research and development
This phase includes partnership and presentation scoping, grant writing support and ongoing mentorship with the Program Producer.

Since 2018, there have been 4 iterations of the program, supporting local artists across a range of artforms including:

  • Contemporary circus
  • Dance and choreography
  • Design
  • Film and screen media
  • Installation
  • Music
  • Participatory art and social practice
  • Photography and photo media
  • Public art
  • Sculpture
  • Site-based practice
  • Sound art
  • Theatre
  • Visual art

Presentation partners have included HOTA, Horizon Festival, Metro Arts, Anywhere Festival, Gold Coast Open House, Splendour in the Grass, Swell, Big City Lights and Placemakers.

In 2023, the program welcomed a new cohort made up of five local artists who will be supported through to June 2024. In addition, the program currently supports artists from the 2019 and 2021 cohorts who are working to present their artwork outcomes.
