Created by the City of Gold Coast and delivered in collaboration with SITUATE Art In Festivals, GENERATE GC is a bespoke program designed to develop new site specific work by Gold Coast artists and creative practitioners. This coming financial year, 2021-22 marks the third iteration of this highly successful program.

GENERATE GC provides an exciting opportunity for Gold Coast artists and creative practitioners to push boundaries, take creative risks and develop new work that responds to the unique potential of Gold Coast communities and environments.

The core focus of the program is the generation, testing and development of ideas and new work to be realised in unique and unlikely places across the Gold Coast. It also builds practice and career sustainability by providing important pathways and links to local and national arts and non-arts partnerships, collaborations and presentation platforms.

Over the lifetime of the program GENERATE GC includes the following four (intersected) phases:

  1. GENERATE GC LAB – a development program that includes a residential, interdisciplinary artist laboratory – led by national artists, curators and designers
  2. A mentoring phase supported by the GENERATE GC team, throughout which participants are assisted to develop their concepts and a refined proposal.
  3. A research and development phase including support from an experienced producer and production manager. The culmination of this phase includes the submission of a proposal for further funding and potential commission by a range of program partners.
  4. The program culminates with the commissioning/presentation phase, where artists who have been successful with their proposal are invited to produce the work for presentation, in collaboration with a partner organisation or festival.

Updates on program activity, where you can see the work of the current participating artists, can be found at SITUATE and Gold Coast Arts and Culture l Facebook. Also check into LENS GC in the second half of 2021 for a GENERATE GC takeover.
