The Gold Coast is one of the most biodiverse cities in Australia, home to a wide range of ecosystems, habitats, plants and animals. We have nearly 600 species of native animals including amphibians, butterflies, birds, mammals, reptiles and freshwater fish. In fact, we have more species of fish, birds, amphibians, and mammals than Kakadu! We also have more than 1700 native plants.
Unfortunately, more than 70 of our native animals and more than 100 of our native plants are at risk of becoming extinct.
We are working hard to protect our landscapes and wildlife, recognising the critical importance of how a healthy natural environment creates a sustainable future for our community.
