Gold Coasters have the chance to reflect on the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, at a special day of remembrance this Thursday.

“With Her Majesty’s funeral tonight and the Federal Government declaring this Thursday as a day of remembrance, our city is giving all residents and visitors a chance to come together to remember the life and service of Her Majesty,’’ said Acting Mayor Donna Gates.

“Plans are progressing regarding a possible permanent memorial for Her Majesty and we will shortly contact the Queen’s Outdoor Trust at Buckingham Palace to seek permission for a memorial, and to then discuss designs.

“On Thursday, we encourage visitors to park further north of Queen Elizabeth Park and walk some of the Jubilee Walkway which runs from Coolangatta all the way to The Spit. That way, they can enjoy a short walk along a section of their choice and then enter Queen Elizabeth Park from the Kirra end.’’

Thursday’s City of Gold Coast event is:

  • Queen Elizabeth Park Coolangatta from 5pm to 6:30pm;
  • An evening of respect and reflection on the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with a live orchestra performance. Catch public transport, walk or take advantage of street parking in the area.

“I will lay a wreath at 4.30pm on behalf of the City. Individuals wanting to leave flowers can, however, the Royal Family has asked for a donation to one of the Queen’s 600 charities, instead of flowers.

“If people plan laying flowers, they can visit the Jubilee Walkway sign in Queen Elizabeth Park (northern end) where flowers can be left.’’
