Local laws

Under the Local Government Act 2009, the City of Gold Coast has powers to make and enforce local laws. Our local laws are designed to enhance the Gold Coast way of life and reflect community needs to ensure safety, harmony and good rule.

Local laws govern a wide range of important issues such as:

  • parking
  • libraries
  • business advertising
  • swimming pools
  • parks and reserves
  • bathing reserves
  • roads and malls
  • cemeteries
  • waste management
  • vegetation management
  • animal management.

Local law-making process

The City established its own local law-making process in 2016. The process is transparent and community-focused.

Council resolves whether to:

  • make the proposed local law(s) as advertised

More information

Local Law No. 17 requires a seller of a property affected by the local law to include special conditions in the contract of sale specifying certain matters about the operation of the local law.

Section 15(2) of Local Law No.17 states that a buyer has a right to terminate the contract if the seller does not comply with this requirement. This right no longer applies following State Government legislation.

Since 5 June 2017 a buyer no longer has a right to terminate a contract for the seller's failure to comply with this requirement. However, a buyer may still have a right of termination in respect of a pre-5 June 2017 contract.
