Tournament lures fishers to Gold Coast waterways

Cr Hammel with anglers preparing for the Pest Fishing Classic

The annual Gold Coast Pest Fishing Classic will lure crowds to the city’s waterways this Saturday, to catch harmful invasive fish.

Since the event began in 2016, more than four tonnes of pest fish species, such as Tilapia, have been removed by the community.

“The City is proud to deliver this free, family-friendly event in partnership with My Catch Australia,” Acting Mayor Mark Hammel said.

“Pest fish outcompete our native species for food and shelter, and they introduce diseases and parasites to our waterways, which are difficult to remove.

“By working together, we can protect our local waterways and ensure they remain enjoyable for years to come.”

More than 500 anglers have registered for this year’s event.

“The tournament is open for all-ages and experiences, but if competition isn’t your thing, you’re still encouraged to cast your lines to help remove invasive fish,” said Cr Hammel.

Matt Redmond from My Catch Australia said the event remains free for everyone thanks to ongoing support from sponsors and the City.

“We have something for everyone, with multiple individual categories and, for the second year, a team competition.

“Along with enjoying the great outdoors and helping improve the city’s beautiful lakes and waterways, we have a host of categories with amazing prizes to be won.”

This is a Gold Coast-wide event.
