Monitor conditions
The City is asking for Gold Coasters to MONITOR CONDITONS for flash flooding due to heavy rainfall today, which is expected to ease tonight.
The highest falls today from 9am to 2pm have been Tallebudgera Creek dam (106mm), Upper Springbrook (104mm), Currumbin Valley (96mm), Tallebudgera Creek Rd (92mm), Coplicks Bridge Tallebudgera (79mm), Bonogin (79mm).
There has been approximately 200mm of rain in parts of the southern Gold Coast since rainfall began yesterday.
The higher forecast of 300-400mm for today is now less likely as rainfall shifts north later this afternoon.
We are expecting another 120mm in some areas of the Gold Coast through Saturday and Sunday based on current forecasts.
Flash flooding
In saying this, there is still localised flash flooding occurring across the Gold Coast and we are expecting further flooding on roads during the night.
There is potential for minor to moderate flooding of Gold Coast rivers and creeks and the Albert Logan River catchment, with a Flood Watch current.
It is crucial for everyone to remember that you should never drive, walk, ride through, play or swim in flood water.
If it’s flooded, forget it. Stay out of flood water completely.
We are already seeing people attempting to drive through floodwaters and getting stuck, putting their lives and the lives of others at risk.
We saw an incident with a motorist stuck in floodwaters this morning at Hardys Road in Mudgeeraba.
Road closures
There are 13 roads currently closed – this number can change quickly.
Beaches
At this stage beaches will remain open tomorrow with lifeguards monitoring the situation closely.
People are reminded to always swim between the red and yellow flags and listen to the advice of lifeguards.
Sandbags
Sandbag stations are now closed.
Over 1700 sandbags were distributed yesterday.
