The Towards Zero Waste Plan is the new waste and resource recovery management plan for the Gold Coast. The 3-year Plan replaces the Solid Waste Strategy 2024.
Our population is estimated to increase to 1 million people by 2050. In addition, the increasing costs of waste management and sending waste to landfill means it’s critical that we have a tangible plan to reduce waste.
The Plan sits under the Climate Resilience and Sustainability Strategy as part of our long-term planning. It outlines our commitment to working with our community to create a sustainable Gold Coast.
The purpose of the Plan is ‘Empowering the Gold Coast towards a zero waste future’. There are 4 objectives:
1. We work together to reduce waste. Our community is aware of how to reduce waste and increase recycling.
2. Our services improve resource recovery. We have the right services to support a greener Gold Coast.
3. Our infrastructure is future focused. Sites and facilities are built to manage waste, increase recycling and reduce carbon emissions.
4. We are invested in change. Our partnerships, planning and business attraction support a circular economy and a sustainable future.
The Plan outlines not only the actions that will help achieve that and what the community will see, but also the targets we are all working towards to help create a sustainable Gold Coast.
