Sports field closures

Use of sports fields is subject to current COVID-19 restrictions.

We keep our sport and recreational facilities open as much as possible to maximise use. But sometimes we need to close sports fields because of wet weather or for maintenance.

We update the information on this page (only if there are changes) at 8.30am and 2pm on business days. It is not updated after business hours, on public holidays or over the weekend. Advice due to wet weather is only a recommendation. It is not possible for Council officers to inspect all sports fields within all parks and weather conditions may change during this time. In these cases, it is the responsibility of the respective club onsite to determine playing and/or training conditions. Schools, clubs and groups who use the fields against the Council's advice are reminded that if they cause damage to the playing surface, they may be liable for fines and/or cost for repairs.

Wet weather

We aim to create opportunities for juniors to stay active and play sport during extended periods of wet weather where possible. Junior and secondary playing fields will, whenever possible, remain open for junior (18 or under) age use in periods of wet weather and will only be fully closed (to both juniors and seniors) in exceptional weather circumstances. Field renovations

We have an annual renovation program for sports fields and facilities, to ensure the fields are in a safe and useable playing condition. Maintenance usually occurs between September and December.

The type of renovation work undertaken on sports fields can include:

  • Coring – mechanical removal of soil core, which is then dragged back across the surface and broken up to top dress the surface. This decompacts and aerates the field.
  • Scarification – mechanical thatch removal via a mower with vertical blades. Thins the turf surface and removes old grass. Completed in single or double directions, dependent on conditions and timeframes.
  • Topdressing – application of soil or sand to reduce undulations and unevenness of the surface.
  • Recycling top dresser – pulls soil up from 200 millimetres down in the surface profile and spreads it across the surface behind the machine.
  • Verti draining – punches holes with a multiple solid tine aerator, deep into the surface and decompacts the profile as it is removed. Relieves compaction, allowing air, water, and fertiliser to disperse into the soil.
  • Resurfacing – uses existing levels and soil conditions. Removes existing turf and re-lays with new turf variety.
  • Rebuilding – using a rotary hoe, amends soil conditions and reshapes surface via laser machinery to provide a more consistent, well-drained playing surface.
  • Amendment program – application of material to improve the soil and decrease nutritional deficiencies. Applied before renovations begin as most renovation work involves the profile.
