About water catchments

A catchment is an area with a natural boundary, such as ridges, hills, or mountains. The Gold Coast hinterland forms a natural boundary for most of our catchments. Within each catchment, surface water drains to a common channel to form rivers or creeks that flow through a range of natural environments and land uses until they reach our coastal water environments.

Gold Coast catchments include:

Broadwater Catchment

The Broadwater is an important recreational water environment and an economic resource for many residents and visitors to the Gold Coast.

Coombabah Catchment

Coombabah Creek, Coombabah Lake, Saltwater Creek and their respective catchments fall within the Coombabah Catchment area.

Coomera River Catchment

The Coomera River catchment lies within the northern part of the Gold Coast and extends into the eastern region of Scenic Rim Council.

Currumbin Creek Catchment

This catchment is next to the NSW border. It extends from Mt Cougal National Park in the west, to Currumbin Rocks and the Pacific Ocean in the east.

Logan/Albert River Catchment

The Logan/Albert Catchment marks the border with City of Gold Coast, Logan City Council and Scenic Rim Council. The Albert River meanders from its headwaters in Lamington National Park, into the Logan River then discharges into Southern Moreton Bay.

Nerang River Catchment

This catchment is the largest and most significant river system on the Gold Coast. It delivers flows through significant rural areas and feeds two dams.

Pacific Beaches Catchment

Information on the Pacific Beaches Catchment (including Flat Rock and Coolangatta Creek).

Pimpama River Catchment

The Pimpama River catchment is situated between Brisbane and the Gold Coast and is part of a green belt connecting Moreton Bay with hinterland areas.

Tallebudgera Creek Catchment

The Tallebudgera Creek Catchment extends from the Springbrook plateau in the west, to the Pacific Ocean in the east.
