Cabomba
Cabomba (Cabomba caroliniana) is a perennial that is native to America. It is classified as a category 3 pest plant under Queensland's Biosecurity Act 2014, and has a Weeds of National Significance status, which means the species has spread over substantial areas of the state. Its impact is so serious that it requires active control to prevent it from spreading to properties still free of this invasive plant.
The species has the potential to obstruct water flow and now dominates nutrient-rich freshwater lakes such as Robina Lakes. It has little value to wildlife. Control is very difficult as it is somewhat resistant to herbicides.
Our management of Cabomba has previously relied on mechanical removal. A new herbicide has been registered for use on Cabomba. We are investigating its use to reduce the plant's density around boat ramps and further spread. For more information, download our Cabomba fact sheet(PDF, 326KB)
