Priority species

The Priority Species Conservation Program helps us conserve and protect our rare and threatened plants and animals.

In consultation with local experts, we have identified 125 plant and 44 animal species as priority species for conservation. They require locally focused actions to safeguard their presence within the Gold Coast.

Priority species are identified by the:

  • likelihood for local population decline in the future
  • ecological consequences of future population decline
  • potential for us to implement successful conservation actions.

The program is an integral part of our nature conservation toolkit. It includes actions that support 5 main themes:

  • critical knowledge improvements
  • habitat restoration, management and protection
  • population expansion and management
  • threat reduction
  • community engagement and partnerships.

By collaborating with both internal and external partners, we will continue to improve conservation outcomes for our most endangered species.
