Step 4: Perfect food portions
Cooking more than you need is one of the main reasons for wasted food in Australia. Serving up too much on a plate also results in a lot of food scraped into bins.
Focus on making and serving only what you need to help reduce food waste. It can also be good for your health by reducing over-eating.
'Handy' guide to portion size
- A palm size and thickness piece of meat is about right.
- A cupped hand of nuts or seeds is about right.
- A clenched fist size of potatoes, rice, pasta or legumes is about right.
- A thumb-sized amount of cheese or dressing is about right.
Other tips
- Let people serve themselves to avoid leftover plate waste. Encourage people to serve themselves to suit their appetite.
- Check packaging for serving size guidelines.
- If you have leftovers, make sure you store them safely in the fridge or freezer and use them later (see Step 5).
Next step
Now that your serving sizes are sorted you are ready for Step 5. Love your food leftovers which will help you reduce food waste.
