Backflow prevention devices protect our drinking water supply from contamination by stopping potentially polluted water flowing back into the system.
Contamination can occur at any point in a water system. This may include:
- system piping that allows access to the drinking water supply
- a connected auxiliary water supply
- submerged inlets
- by-pass arrangements
- removable sections and temporary devices.
Installing a backflow prevention device stops polluted water entering the drinking water supply. A testable or non-testable device can be installed, depending on the risk of contamination.
The City is required to maintain a program for the registration of testable backflow devices. Registration happens automatically when the device is commissioned by a licenced plumber and is updated every year after the device is tested.
Backflow registration fees are charged annually, via an invoice, and are automatically renewed upon receipt of payment. For further information on fees, see our Register of fees and charges.

Testing a backflow device
Only a Queensland licensed plumber with a backflow endorsement can test the device. As the owner of a property, you are responsible for having the backflow device tested annually.
If the test fails, the plumber must repair or replace the device immediately. It is a criminal offence to tamper with, or remove, a backflow prevention device without approval.
The licensed plumber must submit the testing report within 10 business days after inspecting or testing the device.
The plumber will update the registration details if a new device is installed or replaced.
