Backflow prevention devices protect our drinking water supply from contamination by stopping potentially polluted water flowing back into the system.
Contamination can occur at any point in a water system. This may include:
- system piping that allows access to the drinking water supply
- a connected auxiliary water supply
- submerged inlets
- by-pass arrangements
- removable sections and temporary devices.
Installing a backflow prevention device stops polluted water entering the drinking water supply. A testable or non-testable device can be installed, depending on the risk of contamination.
Testable devices must be registered with Council and tested annually.
Property owners with registered testable devices are invoiced an annual fee every August/September. For more fee information, go to Register of fees & charges.
Testing a backflow device
Only a Queensland licensed plumber with a backflow endorsement can test the device. As the owner of a property, you are responsible for having the backflow device tested annually.
If the test fails, the plumber must repair or replace the device immediately. It is a criminal offence to tamper with, or remove, a backflow prevention device without approval.
The licensed plumber must submit the testing report within 10 business days after inspecting or testing the device.
The plumber will update the registration details if a new device is installed or replaced.

Plumbers submitting a report must use State Government Form 9 - Report on inspection and testing of backflow prevention devices, registered air gaps and registered break tank.
