Community safety

  • If it's flooded, forget it

  • Avoid areas with fallen or damaged trees
  • Avoid letting children play at parks or playgrounds near fallen or damaged trees
  • Report any fallen, damaged trees or debris via our Report a problem pages or City App
  • Wear protective clothing and shoes during clean up
  • Work with others, rather than alone, and protect yourself from the sun
  • Drink only fresh water – if your water supply is contaminated, drink bottled water
  • Do not use generators or gas barbecues inside – the fumes are harmful and can be deadly
  • Visit the Queensland Government's Tips for returning home safely page

Financial support

Financial support is available for eligible community members and businesses impacted by disasters.

For financial assistance after a disaster, visit the Queensland Government's Financial assistance | Disaster relief page.

You can also explore the following resources to find out if you are eligible to receive support:

Insurance

After a disaster you should contact your insurer as soon as possible to find out what is covered on your policy and ask advice on repairs and building work that is required at your property. Ensure you keep records and take photos of any damage to property and contents.

Mental health support

Disasters and emergency events can be traumatic. If you're experiencing emotional stress or need mental health support, help is available here:

Clean up and waste removal

  • Report any fallen trees that are a risk to the community via the City of Gold Coast App or Report a problem
  • Put food waste into your general waste bin or be dropped to your nearest Waste and Recycle Centres or temporary drop-off points
  • Place smaller green waste in your green organics bin
  • Take larger green waste and storm debris to our Waste and Recycling Centre
  • Reduce the risk of increased mosquito numbers after heavy rain by removing any pools of still water around your house and yard
  • For more advice, visit the Queensland Government's Rebuilding & cleaning up page
