Austinville–Bonogin Nature-Based Recreation Precinct

We are investigating and planning new nature-based recreation opportunities in Austinville and Bonogin. These projects will give people more ways to enjoy nature while protecting the unique environmental and cultural heritage of the hinterland.

Project details

The Austinville, Bally Mountain and Bonogin conservation areas are home to popular spots such as the Austinville Waterhole and Bally Mountain Summit. Increased visitor numbers and limited facilities are putting pressure on the natural environment.

To help meet demand and conserver the environment, we will:

  • improve public access
  • create visitor amenities
  • create new walking trails.

These upgrades will balance recreation with conservation and encourage the community to connect with nature sustainably. New trails will link to the wider network to support recreation, fire management and ecological restoration.

New visitor areas

Two new visitor (day-use) areas may be developed within the precinct.

Austinville Conservation Area (Mudgeeraba Creek section)

We are developing designs for the open grassed area next to Mudgeeraba Creek to become a trailhead with facilities such as public amenities, shelters, picnic tables and educational signs. It could also provide access to the wider trail network.

Bonogin Conservation Area

We are also investigating the potential for the end of Bonogin Road to become a trailhead and visitor area. It could support access to the Bally Mountain and Bonogin Conservation Area’s trails as well as provide spaces for nature play and group activities.

These facilities would give people safe access to nature while protecting the surrounding environment.

Next steps

We are continuing ecological restoration to protect and improve the areas' natural values.

The next phase is to develop a detailed landscape concept plan for the Austinville visitor area, including carpark and pedestrian access. We'll consult with the Austinville Valley community and the wider Gold Coast for feedback to help refine the design.

Trail upgrades will progress to the detailed design phase, focusing on sustainable routes, accessibility and environmental protection. These trails will provide recreation, fire management access and support restoration work.

We'll share updates and invite community feedback as the project progresses.
